Anytime an athlete attempts a handstand, they should always treat it as if it is freestanding. With handstands being such a valuable movement to build a strong and stable body, they are being taught more more every day. (At least I hope) With that being said, I feel there is an element that coaches are missing when teaching the handstand. That element is making sure the athlete has proper alignment of the body from start to finish. Reason being, one of the first lessons can be a handstand against the wall, the individual is usually in a hurry to get upside down which causes them to forget about the rest and use improper technique. The problem with this is that isn’t much carry over when attempting a free standing handstand. Today’s goal is just to get you to think about that proper position and understand what needs to be done to achieve it. Below I will show you the correct body position along with the positions that most of you are familiar with ๐
