Let me start by congratulating everyone who participated in the 2014 CrossFit Games. I’m still in shock knowing that the 2014 season is over and based off my conversations with the athletes and coaches, they are as well.
Watching Rich make his comeback was absolutely incredible. With the later workouts being traditional CrossFit movements, he knew he could turn it on because that’s what his training prepared him to do. He has the basics dialed in so well that it was almost easy for him to make his unstoppable comeback.
I have wrote a few blogs in the past stating that for an athlete to be great at this sport, they will have to do everything they possibly can to master the basics. Before we can get flashy with our pull-ups/muscle ups, we need to make sure and have a strong rep count of strict pull-ups while in a hollow position. Being able to maintain this powerful position will have much carry over when start applying the kip or the butterfly technique.
Were the athletes’ movements flawless? Not close. But do they have a great understanding on how to use their body in motion in a very strong manor? Absolutely. What I am trying to get at, is that I completely understand that movement is going to breakdown because of mental and physical reasons. If you can train these movements knowing that you are maximizing your position daily then the idea would be that when you are at your limits in a workout, your body will resort back to it’s default position which will be a correct one!
