Segueing from yesterday’s topic of core strength, I’d like to address overhead stability. It comes as no surprise that in order to perform overhead movements on the barbell, it takes a strong core, as well as shoulder strength and mobility. After watching multiple regionals this year, one thing I noticed was how many of ex-gymnasts were able to perform their overhead squats in a clean grip. They wasted no time getting the barbell overhead and the shoulder mobility of these individuals was incredible. I’m not saying that this is how these movements need to be performed, some of us will simply never get that sort of mobility no matter how strong we are, but it is another example of how the carry over from the gymnastics drills/stretches can only lead to more efficient movements and better body awareness. skill: 3×10 shoulder shrugs while in a handstand- rest 1 min July is here!
