With the conclusion of the Junior World Championships this past weekend, Connor Felstead has completed what has been nothing more than a whirlwind of a year in the sport of Weightlifting. Connor picked up a barbell in his first local meet sometime in October and in doing so qualified for the American Open. At the American Open, his total was high enough to get him in the A session for the Junior Nationals. At the Junior Nationals his total was high enough to take the gold medal and qualify him for the Junior Pan-American Championships. At Junior Pan Am’s he maintained his ranking and was able to qualify for the Junior World Championships. It is almost July and in less than a year Connor has only competed in one local meet but two International meets and two National meets walking away with a National Championship medal around his neck and a college scholarship for the sport of weightlifting.
Connor was a CrossFitter in September. 10 months later in July he is one of the country’s brightest prospects for the future. At the Junior World Championships, Connor snatched 110 kg and CJ 135 kg. These were not personal records nor his best performance in competition. However, it is important to remember that Connor is still a beginner. I know that he has competed in more international meets in one year than I’ve competed in my life and yet he is still a beginner.
The future for Connor could not be more bright. He will be attending Northern Michigan University in the fall and is already beginning to adapt to their training program which has a much longer distance approach to it than most. This fact will serve Connor very very well in the future. Check out his videos from Junior Worlds below.
