Today at King’s Ridge we hit the highest intensity day in the squat program. The majority of our athletes were able to complete six sets of two front squats plus four back squats at 100% of their best front squat or more. It took a little convincing to get them to put the weight on the bar but you could see their confidence rise with each rep that they completed. We are 10 weeks into a squat program and while I could see the incredible strength gains they had already made, the hearts and minds were hesitant to believe it. You could see that mentality start to shift by the end of the workout.
I’ve always said that half the battle is believing you can lift the weight. A couple months ago I wrote a blog about why a 100 pound pitbull always wins against a 300 pound man. The pitbull never believes he could lose and never fears that the man. My high school athletes Who completed the work at the prescribed weight began to understand that idea.
Much of your training is going to be fought between your ears. Most missed lifts happen long before the person steps on the platform. Most workouts that end poorly likely ended that way because of a mental failure that happened in the warm-up room.
Trust your body to be better than it is. Trust your body to be the magnificent creation that it was created to be. Remember that you were not created by incapable, weak hands. The magnanimity of your Creator means that your potential is far beyond what your mind believes is possible. Trust that truth. Today I got to see a whole bunch of high school boys and girls realize that their body was capable of much much more than they gave it credit for. I pray each of you does the same.
