I wanted to give everyone following the workouts a little bit of an update on where we are in the programming.
For those of you on the weightlifting blog it should be painfully clear this week that we are sort of “reloading” for a pretty tough cycle coming up. Originally I had planned to try and peak y’all for the Arnold Weightlifting Championships but I feel like that is probably shortsighted since most of you probably did not sign up for that competition. Instead we will be completing a short nine week cycle intended to peak you for a competition on March 28th. If you’re in the state of Georgia and are looking for a competition, myself as well as some other Team Georgia coaches are hosting one in Buford that weekend. That would be a perfect opportunity for you to come lift in a quality environment in a meet that is going to be run well. For the rest of you following the programming, go ahead and start looking for a meet that for that weekend or the weekend after. My plan is to focus on the jerk for the first five weeks. Furthermore, I believe some of the major problems with the jerk come with overhead mobility. The first five weeks will be designed to increase both our comfortability with heavy jerks as well as our consistency with heavy jerks through some overhead mobility work. The last four weeks of the cycle will be peaking prep for March 28. Some of you are wondering right now when we get to go through a hard squat cycle again. Just wait. After March 28th we will start a nasty squat cycle designed to peak you for the National Championships at the beginning of August. Just be patient. You may regret that desire in early April.
For those of you following the competition blog, our season is coming to an end. I have always said that the competition blog is designed to peak you for the Open. After the open is complete, for those of you that make Regionals, I only do individualized programming. For those of you that don’t make the Regional, you’re off-season begins. That means you have five weeks left to push hard to qualify top 20. Most of you aren’t stating this out loud but from the few texts and emails I’ve gotten, I know what you’re feeling right now. We are smack in the middle of a lactate buffering cycle that will make the lifts feel a bit sluggish and make your capacity for high percentage lifts much tougher. However, the conditioning we are doing is designed to peak you for the rigors of the five Open workouts coming at the end of February. You will see an increased difficulty in the conditioning over the next two weeks and then two weeks out we will start to taper a bit. The goal here is to help you overreach your capacity during the Open. If you’ve ever looked back at your results many of you will notice that you felt more comfortable completing the fourth and fifth Open workout then the first or second. This is because your bodies had not been prepped to increase your lactate threshold and increase your ability to flush lactic acid prior to the Open. By the end of the Open your body was more used to the stress. However, for many of you it was too late because of poor performances early. The current conditioning cycle we are in should eliminate that problem. Hunker down, grit your teeth, and remember that for many of you we are in the final stages of your season.
Let’s get it.
