Have you ever wondered why so many of the training videos for international weightlifting teams shows the warm-ups. If you pull up the Polish training videos for the 70’s, the Russian training videos from the same era, or the Bulgarian training videos from the 80’s you will notice one consistent theme. It’s not the same first pull, it’s not the type of auxiliary movements they are doing, it’s their warm-up. Every international weightlifting team warms up with calisthenics and dynamic range of motion work.
They do it in the mornings before they eat breakfast, they do in the evenings before they go to bed, and overall they do it 2 to 3 times a day in an effort to maintain their general physical preparedness. It helps their joints, balance, coordination, and it ultimately helps them remain a good athlete.
I do them as often as I can. My goal is to do them every morning and some form of dynamic range of motion work before I go to bed. I figure if all international weightlifting teams are consistent in one thing, I better be consistent on that one thing. If multiple world record holders from multiple countries warm up this way then maybe we ought to give it a shot.
Here’s some examples of some calisthenics we did at the seminar last weekend as well as some training videos with their warmups included.
Bottom-line good weightlifters warm-up this way, we should too.
