Hey guys I wanted to do a quick post to those of you out there who hit the gym day in and day out putting countless hours of work in and aren’t seeing the results you expect or desire. I was talking to Kelly Rexroad-Williams the other day about her squats and she said something to me that was not only a HUGE insight into her work ethic and perseverance but also a bit of an insight into the reality of athletics.
She was doing some pretty heavy and intense front squats and I asked her how it was going. (Previously Kelly has battled some knee problems and her coach is begging to see her leg strength come back) She was elated to have front squatted 99kg and referenced her best ever being 106kg. What she said next astounded me and was a huge encouragement to me to keep my nose to the ground. She simply said, “hopefully in a year it will be 107.”
Kelly knows the value and payoff of hard work. She knows that nothing in her sport comes easy and even after months of work and sweat the gains are almost always minimal. She knows that sometimes hard work results in very few if any gains despite her best efforts. But she also knows that laziness ALWAYS ends in decline.
Nothing comes easy and nothing comes fast but perseverance and hard work are the only way to growth. Check out this video below showing a small improvement in my clean that has been a year in the making. It sometimes takes years. That’s just athletics.
