As many of you have seen by now, myself, Mike Poppa, and Emily Carothers will be hosting multiple training camps over the course the year. At each camp there will also be one or more Regional/Games level athletes in attendance to help coach, answer questions, and train alongside you. Those athletes in attendance will be those directly correlated to the Region the camp takes place in.
In these training camps we are going to specifically focus on the development and utilization of the Olympic lifts for the sport of Crossfit (aka the “Power” part) and the perfection and carryover of body control and gymnastics style movement in the sport (aka the “Grace” part).
In the sport of Crossfit, nothing has as great a carryover as the Olympic lifts. If you can snatch and clean and jerk proficiently then certainly a thruster or a box jump is easily done. The proper utilization and implementation of the barbell is essential to the higher development of Crossfit athletes. We will spend the morning session of Saturday and Sunday exclusively covering the Snatch and Clean and Jerk. Furthermore, we will have a all-out max night Friday night before heading into the weekend. During the teaching sessions, we will cover the basic 4 positions of the Snatch and Clean and the three major requirements of each position. We will also cover the basics of the jerk and a simple progression to ensure proper footwork and bartrack. We guarantee you will leave with a much more complete and well-rounded understanding and practice of the lifts. Lastly, there is a lecture on the subtle differences in setup and bar track between different lifters and how you can best cater your lifting to your body mechanics.
The only element in the sport of Crossfit that rivals the Olympic lifts in importance and value are the basic gymnastic and bodyweight movement requirements. Handstand Pushups, Handstand Walking, Muscleups, Pullups, and Toes To Bar are all given very high value and preference in Crossfit. Furthermore, these movements often are the crux of winning or losing a workout. We have seen, with this year’s Regionals especially, that an athletes’ ability or inability to be proficient at these movements is critical for performance and excellence in the sport. During the training camps, movement and connectivity expert Mike Poppa covers the basics and foundation for each of these movements. Handstands, Muscleup, and most of the other gymnastic style movements center around the hollow position and the arch position. Mike, with 2-time Games competitor and former PAC-10 Champion gymnast, lays the groundwork for perfection of these movements and in every afternoon session guides attendees to complete these movements with precision. He will also lecture on the necessity and importance of the hollow and arch position.
Added to the already full agenda, we will complete two Crossfit workouts utilizing the things we taught in prior sessions and we will also be doing question and answer sessions with attending coaches and athletes on Competition Prep and Strategy.
These camps promise to be a unique look into some of the more recent developments in Olympic Weightlifting, the carryover of body position to gymnastic movement, and an opportunity to learn and perform with coaches, affiliate owners, and athletes from around your region.
