Regionals are a fickle thing. With the workouts this year it has been always a crapshoot to see who will excel at each specific event. In south-central that case is more true than ever.
Power and Grace Performance has two athletes in the south-central region in San Antonio each with their own specialties and strengths.
Jeff Germond has led the way with a couple special performances in event one and two. Jeff snatched a PR hang snatch of 255#. If you watch it you’ll see that he had at least 10 pounds more in the tank. His precision and focus, despite a miss in the warm-up room, was not only encouraging but admirable. Jeff then turned around and walked on his hands 110 feet. Jeff is capable of a little more than that but stumbled just before the 120 Mark. Jeff currently sits in 16th after a bit of a struggle with the muscle ups on Nasty Girls version two.
Jason Hoggan has had a wild ride. While Jeff has been Mr. consistent, Jason has struggled to maintain the consistency that he is exhibited in training. On the hang snatch, he absolutely destroyed 230 pounds for his opener but in jumping to 245 he misloaded the bar to 265. This was a near near make at a 35 pound jump. 265 pounds would have been a 15 pound PR for Jason. When he realized that he had jumped 20 pounds beyond what he planned he dropped to 250 but was unsuccessful. A posted score of 230 was not at all what he had looked to accomplish on event one. Furthermore, Jason fell just 10 feet short of the 120 mark in the HS walk. The story of the day however for Jason would come during nasty girls. During the middle of the second round Jason felt a strange pop in his chest and an immediate shortness of breath. Jason managed to finish the work out with an exemplary time but upon further examination he has broken his first rib and separated his shoulder. After a year of training in preparation for this event Jason will be sitting this one out.
Regionals are a fickle thing. You can prepare and be in the best position of your life to excel at the regional level. The workouts can end up just not falling to your advantage or an injury can prevent that return trip/first time trip to the Games from happening. This is the nature and beauty of the sport. Tomorrow we will look to Jeff to continue his success while at the same time remind Hoggan that curveballs are just a part of life.
Week three day one complete.
