Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
Today, we wanted to share a quick tip. One of the most commonly overlooked aspects of the lifts we see is also one of the most important, the grip. Considering that your grip is the only thing connecting you to the barbell, and that everything you do to create power and stability is transferred to the bar almost solely through your grip, it’s obviously important to get it correct. While (almost) everyone knows and understands the importance of the hookgrip, we still see athletes everywhere gripping the bar inadequately.
In the Snatch, due to the wider grip it’s important to be very intentional about squaring your hand/wrist to the bar in order to allow the hand to wrap completely around the bar. We often see athletes leave their hand at the same angle of their forearm making it very difficult to get the ring and pinky fingers wrapped sufficiently around the barbell. This is more commonly an issue for athletes with smaller hands, as they have a hard time creating the most secure grip possible. Lastly, it’s definitely more common in the snatch due to the wider grip, but it’s not exclusive to the snatch. Be sure to get that ‘full’ grip in the clean as well.
